Russia detects over 8,700 new Covid-19 cases, record 135 deaths in past 24 hours - HQ

MOSCOW. May 20 (Interfax) - The daily growth in new Covid-19 cases continues to decline in Russia: the coronavirus response headquarters reported over 8,700 new cases on Wednesday, which is the lowest indicator since May 2.

"In the past 24 hours, 8,764 Covid-19 cases were confirmed in 84 regions of Russia, including 4,021 active asymptomatic cases (45.9%)," the headquarters said.

The growth in new cases has reduced to Russia's all-time low of +2.9%.

By now, Russia has reported 308,705 coronavirus cases. According to Johns Hopkins University, Russia ranks second in the global coronavirus table after the United States (more than 1.52 million cases total, +20,000 new cases in the past 24 hours). Brazil ranks third (271,800 cases total, +16,500 new cases in the past 24 hours). The number of coronavirus cases in Brazil has been growing so rapidly that it might replace Russia on the second position of the anti-rating within a week.

Moscow recorded 2,699 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 152,306.

Russia reported 135 coronavirus-related deaths, including 75 in Moscow, over the past day. This is a new record. The previous one, 119 deaths, was seen on May 16.

Over the day, 9,262 coronavirus patients recovered in Russia, more than half of them, 5,440, in Moscow.
