Number of Covid-19 cases recorded in Russia nearing 300,000 - operative response HQ
MOSCOW. May 19 (Interfax) - The number of people infected with the new coronavirus in Russia has nearly reached 300,000, as another 9,363 Covid-19 cases have been recorded nationwide over the past 24 hours, the coronavirus operative response headquarters said on Tuesday.
As many as 115 Covid-19-related deaths have been registered in this period.
"Another 9,263 coronavirus infection cases have been confirmed in 83 regions of Russia over the past 24 hours, including 3,988 cases (43.1%) revealed proactively in people manifesting no clinical symptoms," the headquarters said in a statement on Tuesday.
The cumulative number of Covid-19 cases recorded nationwide over the entire period of the epidemic has reached 299,941, it said.
The number of new cases recorded over a 24-hour period has been under 10,000 for the fourth day in a row (8,926 on May 18, 9,709 on May 17, and 9,200 on May 16). The daily increase on May 19 was the same as the day before (+3.17%).
According to The Johns Hopkins University, which is monitoring the global spread of Covid-19, Russia is still rated second in the world in terms of the overall number of coronavirus cases recorded. The United States tops the ranking with over 1.5 million cases, and Brazil had climbed to the third position with 255,368 cases as of Monday, having surpassed the United Kingdom with 247,709 cases. The daily increase in Brazil was over 14,000 cases, while that in the United Kingdom was some 2,700. Hence, Brazil has steadily occupied the third position on the ranking, although it is still significantly behind Russia in this respect.
As many as 3,545 people have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in Moscow alone over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases recorded in the city to 149,607.
The number of Covid-19-associated deaths recorded in Russia has grown by 115 to 2,837 over the past 24 hours, including 71 such deaths in Moscow alone. This is the second largest daily number of deaths associated with the new coronavirus recorded in Russia over the entire period of the epidemic (119 such deaths were recorded on May 16).
Another 5,921 people diagnosed earlier with Covid-19, including 2,583 in Moscow, have recovered and been discharged from hospital in the past 24 hours. The total number of patients who have recovered from coronavirus infection has reached 76,130 nationwide.
