China Unicom discussing possibility of undersea cable with Taiwanese telecom operators

Beijing. August 10. INTERFAX-CHINA - A China Unicom delegation is negotiating with Taiwanese telecom operators to construct a joint undersea network cable, a China Unicom employee told Interfax on Aug. 10.

The proposed agreement with Taiwanese operators ChungHwa Telecom Co. Ltd. and Taiwan Mobile Co. Ltd. would connect the Taiwanese city of Danshui with Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, under a network compatible with 2G, 3G and broadband Internet, according to the China Unicom source, who wished to remain anonymous.

China Unicom recently entered into agreements with ChungHwa Telecom to reduce 3G roaming fees and cooperate over value-added services for the download of Taiwanese music, movies and other digital media.

The two parties are also discussing the possibility of cooperating over the forthcoming China Unicom iPhone release, according to the source.
