Russian coal production falls 14.1% in July - Rosstat

MOSCOW. Aug 20 (Interfax) - Russian coal production fell 14.1% in January-July 2009 compared to the same period of 2008, the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) said.

Coal production fell 7.6% to 23.7 million tonnes in July 2009 compared to July 2008, but increased 3% compared to June. Bituminous coal production totaled 20.5 million tonnes in July, down 0.3% from July 2008 but up 5.3% from June 2009

Open cast mines produced 11.2 million tonnes of bituminous coal in July, down 6.4% from July 2008 but up 13.8% from June 2009. Deep mines produced 9.3 million tonnes, up 8.4% but down 3.3%, respectively. Bituminous coal production fell 11% in January-July 2009.

Lignite coal production totaled 3.2 million tonnes in July, down 36.7% from July 2008 and 9.3% from June 2009. Lignite coal production fell 23.4% in the seven months.

Coking coal production came to 5.6 million tonnes in July, down 2.6% from July 2008 but up 7.3% from June 2009. Coking coal output declined 21.8% in the quarter.
