UPDATE: China Unicom and Apple announce iPhone deal

Shanghai. August 28. INTERFAX-CHINA - China Unicom and Apple Inc. jointly announced on the afternoon of Aug. 28 that China Unicom will sell the iPhone in China.

It is likely that China Unicom will launch the iPhone in the fourth quarter of 2009, the telecom operator said in a statement published on its Web site, although it provided no further details.

China Unicom's net profit tumbled by 45.2 percent year-on-year to RMB 6.51 billion ($952.9 million) in the first half of 2009. It generated revenue of RMB 78.49 billion ($11.49 billion) in the same period, according to financial figures it announced on the same day.
