China building reactors that do not comply with domestic nuclear safety standard - expert

Weihai. September 25. INTERFAX-CHINA - China is building nuclear power reactors with updated second generation nuclear power technology that does not comply with the country's current nuclear power safety standards, which has been in effect since 2004, a nuclear power expert said at an industry forum on Sept. 24.

Third generation nuclear power technology is 100 times safer than second generation technology, Tang Zide, a senior engineer with State Nuclear Power Technology Corp. Ltd., said at Lnoppen's 3rd Annual China Nuclear Power Summit in Rongcheng City, Shandong Province.

China has 11 nuclear power reactors that use updated second generation nuclear power technology in various stages of development. These reactors have a total installed capacity of 11,100 megawatts.
