Nabucco will spur construction of new pipelines in region

BAKU. Sept 29 (Interfax) - The successful implementation of the Nabucco gas pipeline project will lead to the construction of new pipelines in the region, said Azeri President Ilham Aliyev.

"There can be no doubt that if the Nabucco project is implemented successfully, it will lead to the construction of other pipelines in the region for diversification purposes," the Azeri leader told a press conference held jointly with the Romanian president Traiann Basescu in Bucharest on Tuesday.

The projects initiated and implemented by Azerbaijan lead subsequently to other projects being green lit, he said.

"If the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline had not been built, in other words, if this corridor had not been opened, then probably the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline would not have been built, either. If the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline had not been built, then today there would be no talk about Nabucco at all. Because the implementation of the Nabucco project relies totally on the gas infrastructure that exists in Azerbaijan today. Thus, we can see how one successful project leads to another," Aliyev said.
