China drafts law for oil and gas pipeline security

Shanghai. October 28. INTERFAX-CHINA - China has drafted a law aimed at protecting the country's pipelines, ensuring transmission safety and promoting domestic energy security, state media reported on Oct. 27.

The standing committee of the National People's Congress, China's legislature, examined the draft law on Oct. 27, Xinhua news agency reported.

China's pipeline infrastructure is facing severe external threats, Cao Kangtai, of the State Council's Legal Office told the committee. Oil and gas theft is rampant. and pipelines, especially natural gas pipelines, are potential terrorist targets.

Cao said that it is necessary to further strengthen pipeline protection during operation and establish a more effective mechanism to protect pipelines..
