Gas transit system to remain state property - Ukraine PM

KYIV. Nov 16 (Interfax) - Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on Monday swore to prevent the country's state-owned natural gas distribution system from ever being privatized, no matter whether she is "in government or in opposition."

"Wherever I am, in government or in opposition, never in my life will I allow the privatization of our gas distribution system, the creation of any international consortiums, or any encroachments by other states on our gas distribution system, because it is our national treasure, something that must always remain the state property of Ukraine," Tymoshenko said in a statement published by the government press service.

"Presidential election campaigns are the only explanation" for rumors that the system might fall into private hands, she said.
