Russia slashes quota for migrant workers for 2010

MOSCOW. Nov 20 (Interfax) - The quota for the foreign work force in Russia will be almost two million people in 2010, the Russian Federal Migration Service (FMS) said.

"Following the order by the Ministry of Health Care and Social Development and the relevant decree by the Russian government, the quota will be reduced against 2009 to 1,944,000 work permits," head of the FMS external work migration department Alexei Lomkin told a press conference at Interfax in Moscow.

In 2009, the quota for the foreign work force was over 3,800,000 people, he said.

The actual 2010 quota will be 1,300,000 people, excluding the reserve in case Russia needs more workers from abroad, Lomkin said.
