China Mobile to aid Sanya in becoming 3G wireless city

Beijing. December 11. INTERFAX-CHINA - China Mobile Communications Corp. (China Mobile) and the municipal government of Sanya wlll jointly invest RMB 940 million ($137.66 million) toward a citywide 3G wireless project in Sanya City, Hainan Province, a China Mobile employee told Interfax on Dec. 11.

The wireless city network will run on China's homegrown TD-SCDMA standard and is projected to be completed in five years.

Yang Youli, from China Mobile's marketing department, said the 3G network will be applied in three major areas. The entire city will be covered by wireless signal, information and communication systems for government offices will be implemented, and a tourism information and e-commerce service platform will be established.

Under the wireless city concept, an entire city is covered under a Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) network, providing high-speed wireless access for any Wi-Fi-capable mobile device. This idea was first implemented in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in April 2005.

Currently, a number Chinese cities are constructing their own citywide wireless projects, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
