Ukrainian steel majors up output in 2 mths
KYIV. March 2(Interfax) - Most of Ukraine's steel majors boosted finished roll production in January-February.
ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih (formerly Kryvorizhstal), the country's biggest steel mill, raised finished roll production tentatively 18.4% year-on-year to 804,000 tonnes, the company told Interfax.
Azovstal said it increased roll output 87.6% year-on-year to 859,000 tonnes, Zaporizhstal reduced it 9.5% to 409,000 tonnes and the Ilich works from Mariupol raised it 54% to 619,000 tonnes.
The Alchevsk Iron & Steel Works, a member of the Industrial Union of Donbass (IUD) group, cut roll output 26.3% year-on-year to 423,000 tonnes, and IUD's Dzerzhinsky Metallurgical Combine (DMK) cut it 22.4% to 455,000 tonnes.

Ukraine's steel industry boosted finished roll output 11% year-on-year in January-February to 4.514 million tonnes, the Industrial Policy Ministry said. Crude steel production grew 12% to 5.069 million tonnes and pig iron grew 15% to 4.42 million tonnes.
However in January 2010, the industry boosted finished roll output 20% year-on-year to 2.434 million tonnes, crude steel production jumped 26% to 2.726 million tonnes and pig iron grew 25% to 2.338 million tonnes.
Steel industry output in Ukraine started to plummet in August 2008 due to a drop in demand, particularly in October-December. Some steel mills stopped some of their capacity. However some signs of improvement were seen in May.
