Govt support helped prevent

ZHUKOVSKY, Moscow region. June 30 (Interfax) - Companies of the Russian machine building industry did not suffer serious damage to their businesses during the economic crisis, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said at the international forum Engineering Technologies 2010 in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow, on Wednesday.

The government both supported strategic enterprises and sought to stimulate demand for specific commodities, for example automobiles and agricultural equipment, Putin said.

"Acting through infrastructure projects, we formed additional orders for road machinery, energy generating and transport equipment. All of these measures helped the machine building sector get through the crisis without critical losses," the prime minister said.

The machine building industry is recovering rapidly, he said.

"Since the beginning of the year, the output of machinery and equipment has grown by 10%, the production of transport means has increased by 22.5%, and the production of energy generating equipment by over 30%," Putin said.
