GM-Avtovaz shuts down for 2-wk summer vacation

MOSCOW. July 19 (Interfax) - The GM-Avtovaz joint venture will be shut down for a two-week holiday July 19-August 2.

The company will perform maintenance during the shutdown. GM-Avtovaz will begin operating two eight-hour shifts a day, five days a week on September 21, the company said in a press release.

It was reported earlier that GM-Avtovaz boosted production 58% to 16,454 cars in the first half of 2010.

GM-Avtovaz shipped 16,858 cars to dealers, including 915 to dealers in other CIS states. That is 57% more than in the first half of 2009 and includes 4,921 cars sold under the state's discounted loan program and 1,693 under the car scrappage program.

The company plans to produce 37,000 cars this year.

The Chevrolet Niva is sold by 143 dealers in 97 Russian cities, as well as eight dealers and three distributors in the other CIS states.

GM-Avtovaz began producing vehicles in September 2002. It began making an updated version of the Chevrolet Niva on March 10, 2009.
