Freight traffic in Kazakhstan up 11.6% in nine months

ASTANA. Oct 14 (Interfax) - Cargo traffic in Kazakhstan totaled 269.989 billion tonne-km in January-September 2010, which is a year-on-year increase of 11.6%, the State Agency for Statistics has reported.

The rail transportation over the reporting period increased by 7.8% to 152. 812 billion tonne-km, car transport rose by 23.7% to 50.929 billion tonne-km, marine freight transportation increased by 125.6% t0 2.248 million tonne-km, air freight by 40% to 60.3 million tonne-km.

Transportation through main pipelines rose by 10.5% to total 63.875 billion tonne-km that includes a 28.3% rise in gas transportation (43.976 billion tonne-km) and a 15.3% increase in oil transport 19.899 billion tonne-km.

According to the statistics, the passenger traffic in the country in the reporting period went up 13.7% to 104.409 billion passenger-km compared to the same period in 2009.

Population of Kazakhstan tops 16.2 million people.
