ZTE completes GPON-based network for Telkom Indonesia

Shanghai. November 23. INTERFAX-CHINA - ZTE Corp., China's second largest provider of telecommunications equipment after Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., announced on Nov. 23 that it completed a large-scale commercial GPON-based (Gigabit Passive Optical Networking) backhaul network for Telkom Indonesia.

The project is based on ZTE's mobile network platform and will improve Internet speeds for Telkom Indonesia.

ZTE declined to disclose the transaction value of the project but told Interfax on Nov. 23 that it will continue derive fees as Telkom Indonesia expands the network.

The broadband penetration rate in Southeast Asia is less than 10 percent at present but is growing rapidly, increasing 6.32 percent every quarter, according to the ZTE.

Telkom Indonesia is the largest telecom operator in Indonesia with roughly 118 million subscribers as of the third quarter of 2010.
