NDRC green lights Jinsha River hydro project

Shanghai. January 21. INTERFAX-CHINA - The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) approved construction plans for the Ahai Hydropower Plant on the Jinsha River in Yunnan Province, the NDRC said on its Website on Jan. 20.

According to the China Electricity Council (CEC), the project will feature five 400-megawatt (MW) turbines and will be constructed by Jinsha River Hydropower Development Co. Ltd. The company was jointly established in 2005 by China Huadian Corp., China Huaneng Group, China Datang Corp., Haneng Holding Group and Yunnan Investment Group.

The project is the second hydro plant to receive NDRC approval to be built along the middle portion of the Jinsha River after the 2,400-MW Jin'an Bridge project got the go-ahead in August 2010. China plans to build eight hydro projects with 20.58 gigawatts (GW) of total installed capacity along this stretch of the river.
