Damascus promises to comply with Annan's plan - ministry
MOSCOW. June 22 (Interfax) - The Syrian authorities have stated that they are going to comply with the plan of the United Nations-Arab Nations joint special envoy Kofi Annan.
At a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in St. Petersburg, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Mualem "reassured that Damascus will continue complying with Annan's plan and its cooperation with the UN Monitoring Mission in Syria," the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
"Al-Mualem highly praised Russia's coherent policy aimed at supporting Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity and the respect for Syrians' political will. He expressed a positive view of Russian ideas in the context of efforts to find ways of international assistance in achieving the cessation of bloodshed and normalization of the situation in Syria, and to shift the domestic events from a confrontation to a dialogue between the authorities and the opposition," the Russian foreign ministry said.
