World Bank to propose economic reform program to Belarus

MINSK. July 9 (Interfax) - World Bank Country Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova Qimiao Fan arrived in Belarus Monday for an official visit, during which there will be a presentation of an economic memorandum on Belarus.

The World Bank office in Belarus said in a press release that the document, which is called Economic Transformation for Growth, contains a complex evaluation of the Belarusian economy over the past decade and looks at its potential for further growth.

Fan will be accompanied by a group of World Bank experts during his visit, which ends on July 14.

"During the visit, a group of World Bank experts will meet with highly placed officials in the government and the National Bank to discuss the outlook for economic development in the country, a reform program for the short- and long- terms and the stages of its implementation," the release says.

Fan was appointed World Bank Country Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova on February 1 2012, replacing Martin Raiser.

Fan is a Chinese citizen. He joined the World Bank in 1991. For several years he headed the World Bank office in Cambodia.

Belarus became a member of the World Bank in 1992. The World Bank has allocated the country $865 million for 12 projects and around 30 national programs obtained support through grant funding of $22.8 million. The World Bank provides consultation aid on economic policy and technical assistance to the Belarusian government in structural reforms.
