Emergency ministry warns of possible landslides, ground subsidence in flood-hit areas

MOSCOW. July 11 (Interfax) - The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry department for the Krasnodar territory has warned the local population of possible landslides and ground subsidence in some districts.

"These natural phenomena in the Apsheronsk, Ust-Labinsk, Kavkazskaya, Tuapse, Otradnaya, Labinsk, Mostovskoy, Abinsk, and Krymsk districts and in the towns of Goryachy, Gelendzhik, Novorossiysk and Sochi could cause incidents involving damage to power transmission line supports and bridge supports," the ministry department told Interfax on Wednesday.

In addition, subsidence and landslides could destroy river bridges and houses and could require the blocking of federal and local motorways and railways, the department said. Some infrastructural facilities could also be disabled, it said.

Devastating floods that hit the region in the early hours of July 7 waterlogged 7,200 houses in Krymsk, Gelendzhik and Novorossiysk and a number of villages, damaged power, gas and water supply systems, and complicated road and railroad communication. The Krymsk district sustained the worst damage.

Local authorities said the disaster killed at least 172 people and injured 30,000. However, the Investigative Committee insisted that 162 people had been killed. The floods also damaged about 200 social infrastructural facilities.
