Fabio Capello named head coach of Russian national football team
MOSCOW. July 26 (Sport-Express/Interfax) - Italian football manager Fabio Capello has been named head coach of the Russian national team and signed a two-year contract with the Russian Football Union, acting Union President Nikita Simonyan said at a press conference in Moscow on Thursday.
Capello started his coaching career in 1987, since which time he has managed the Italian football clubs A.C. Milan, Juventus F.C., and A.S. Roma, the Spanish club Real Madrid C.F., and the English national team.
As the Milan head coach, Capello won the Serie A (the top Italian football league championship) four times, Supercoppa Italiana (the Italian Super Cup) three times, once the UEFA Champions League, and once the UEFA Super Cup.
He also won the Serie A once with Roma and twice with Juventus, although the latter two titles were later revoked because of a corruption scandal in Italian football. Coaching Real Madrid, Capello twice won La Liga (the top league in the Spanish championship).
England coached by Capello reached the 1/8 finals at the FIFA World Cup 2010, where it conceded 1-4 to Germany, and later qualified for the UEFA Euro 2012. Capello resigned due to disagreements with the Football Association about John Terry's captaincy of the national squad in February 2012.
The position of head coach of the Russian national team was vacated in July 2012 by Dutch manager Dick Advocaat, who announced before the UEFA Euro 2012 that he would quit and start coaching the Eindhoven-based club PSV. Russia failed to proceed further than the group stage and qualify for quarter-finals at the recent European championship.
