New York-Moscow flight lands in Iceland after bomb threat - source

MOSCOW. Aug 16 (Interfax) - A Russian passenger airplane on a New York-Moscow flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Iceland after an anonymous call was received claiming the presence of a bomb onboard the plane, a source in the Moscow area's Air Traffic Control Service told Interfax.

"It is Aeroflot's New York-Moscow flight. However, an unknown person told American law enforcement agencies that five suitcases filled with explosives were allegedly present onboard the plane and they would allegedly detonate upon arrival in Moscow. That is why a decision was made to interrupt the flight and land the airplane in Iceland," the source said.

The airplane successfully landed in Reykjavik, after which all passengers were evacuated, he said.

Explosives experts are currently examining the plane and the passengers' luggage.

Aeroflot air carrier representatives have so far been unavailable for comment.
