Moscow to supply arms to Nicaraguan center training drug control officers

MOSCOW. Oct 1 (Interfax) - Russia is ready to supply firearms to Nicaragua, Federal Drug Control Service Director Viktor Ivanov said in Moscow on Monday, after negotiations with Nicaraguan police chief Aminta Granera.

"This is a question of firearms, uniforms and police gadgets," he said.

"Negotiations are underway," Ivanov replied to an Interfax question about particular agreements.

The drug enforcement training center in Nicaragua is a regional institution, which trains law enforcers from all Latin American countries affected by intensive cocaine transit, he said.

Ivanov also recalled that Russia invested about $16 billion in energy projects in Venezuela. "Russia is developing economic relations with Latin America, which is proven by the recent beginning of oil fields development in Venezuela. Our task is to upgrade professionalism of drug control officers for protecting our investments in that region from drug lords," Ivanov said.
