Moscow welcomes Damascus's consent to observe Eid al-Adha ceasefire
MOSCOW. Oct 26 (Interfax) - Russia has welcomed the Syrian government's consent to observe a ceasefire during the four-day Islamic feast of Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayram) as proposed by UN/Arab League special representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.
"The fact that Damascus confirmed its readiness to work towards stopping the bloodshed, paving the way for a political solution to the internal Syrian crisis through a comprehensive dialogue, is of paramount significance," the Russian Foreign Ministry's official spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement on Thursday, commenting on a possible ceasefire in Syria.
A number of armed groups have promised to follow suit, he said.
"At the same time, the Al Qaeda-connected Jabhat an-Nusra group, which has repeatedly claimed responsibility for bloody terrorist attacks, has coarsely rejected the ceasefire proposal, describing it as 'a dirty game'," the diplomat said.
