Ashton and Fule concerned over delay in ballot-counting in Ukraine's election
KYIV. Nov 5 (Interfax) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Catherine Ashton and EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood policy Stefan Fule have expressed concern over delays in ballot-counting in Ukraine's parliamentary elections.
"Since Sunday's election day in Ukraine, High Representative Vice-President Ashton and Commissioner Fule have followed closely the vote count and tabulation. They note with increasing concern that five days after the closure of the polls, consolidated results have still not been announced," says a joint statement by Ashton and Fule posted on the website of the EU Delegation in Ukraine.
The EU representatives urged the Ukrainian authorities and all parties involved to take the necessary steps to finish the count, allowing for the rapid announcement of the final results, which should reflect the genuine will of Ukrainian voters.
"Complaints should be dealt with swiftly and with full respect to the rules and established procedures," they said in the statement.
