Germany will not give weapons to Syrian opposition - ambassador

MOSCOW. Nov 14 (Interfax) - Germany does not intend to supply weapons to the Syrian opposition, said German Ambassador to Russia Ulrich Brandenburg.

"We do not supply weapons to troubled regions. We have abided by this principle for decades and it remains in effect in relation to Syria," he said in an interview with Interfax ahead of German-Russian interstate consultations.

The German ambassador thus denied claims by a representative of the Syrian National Council that Germany was among the countries that pledged to ship weapons to the Syrian opposition.

"We don't think Bashar al-Assad has a political future in Syria. Like all others we are profoundly worried by the current developments in Syria. As you know, more than 30,000 people have been killed in Syria, mostly civilians. An end to the bloodshed is the main goal," he said.

The German ambassador said that a meeting was held in Qatar in an attempt to unite the Syrian opposition on a single opposition platform. "A platform must be devised that would unite all ethnic and religious groups in Syria in the future," Brandenburg said.
