Putin puts forward task of developing measures to support domestic manufacturers
MOSCOW. Nov 21 (Interfax) - The Russian government should develop a plan of action to adapt individual sectors of the economy to the conditions of Russia's membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO), President Vladimir Putin has said.
"We advocated and will undoubtedly continue advocating the interests of our manufacturers. Practically all of our partners - EU, the USA, other WTO countries - do that and in turn we should develop a set of long-term measures aimed at supporting key branches of the economy," Putin said at a session of the Russian Security Council.
He said that such measures must be adopted at both the regional and federal levels. "Support should be given first and foremost to the best production practices, to efficient enterprises, only to competitive products with good prospects. Trying to preserve technological backwardness and low-skilled jobs with low pay is a road to a blind alley," he said.
Putin also noted that supporting the national economy will require complex and flexible regulatory tools, including broad application of protective compensation and anti-dumping measures.
"Nevertheless, our businesses often complain about the excessive duration of procedures and the reluctance of authorities to adopt protective measures. And here, of course, we could learn from WTO old-timers, they are acting very carefully and don't violate anything," Putin felt.
