MOSCOW. Jan 29 (Interfax) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov have reported progress of the strategic naval exercises in the Mediterranean Sea to President Vladimir Putin.

"A phase of the exercises is over. The exercises are rather extensive; they involve all fleets of the Russian Navy. The long-range aviation phase is complete," Shoigu told Putin.

Strategic aircraft flew over the Black and Baltic Seas, as well as the Norwegian Sea and northeastern parts of the Atlantic Ocean, Gerasimov said.

"The jets were refueled in the air and escorted by fighters. Missions were accomplished and crews returned to base. The active phase of exercises in the Mediterranean and Black Seas is scheduled for January 29-30. Preparations are underway pursuant to the exercises scenario," the General Staff chief reported.
