Armenian opposition activist Ovannisyan asks his supporters to leave square in central Yerevan
YEREVAN. Feb 21 (Interfax) - Raffi Ovannisyan, the head of the opposition party Heritage, who came second in the recent presidential elections in Armenia, asked his supporters to leave the Freedom Square in central Yerevan and left to meet with President Serzh Sargsyan.
In the Freedom Square, where Ovannisyan's supporters conducted a rally, the opposition rally was approached by high-ranking police officers who told him the rally was illegal.
The police told Ovannisyan he was violating public order and had to be subjected to administrative liability.
Ovannisyan asked for five minutes to talk to his supporters and agrees to leave the square after that.
According to the police estimation, some 600 people remain near the presidential residence. Security has been tightened around the presidential residence.
Representatives of Heritage have asked their supporters to fulfill police officers' requests and not to violate public order.
