Ukraine imports 8.5% less metal roll in H1

KYIV. Aug 20 (Interfax) - Ukrainian companies imported 800,000 tonnes of metal roll in the first half of this year, 8.5% less than in H1 2012, according to a protocol for a meeting of the heads of mining and metals companies held in Dnepropetrovsk that was released by the association Metallurgprom.

The domestic need for Ukrainian metal roll was about 2.7 million tonnes, or 18.3% of production, which remains the lowest figure among the leading metals-producing countries and represents the main barrier to the development of Ukraine's metallurgical sector.

However, Ukrainian metals companies increased the proportion of metal roll exports from 79.3% in H1 last year to 81.7% in H1 last year. Export volume amounted to 11.8 million tonnes, an 0.9% year-on-year increase.

Earlier, Ukrpromvneshekspertiza announced - citing data from monthly study of the market for steel - that Ukraine had increased overall metal roll exports 0.8% to 11.8 million tones. The most export growth involved slabs, up 15.4%, and rebar, up 20.2%. Wire rod exports were down 28.4%.

According to the customs figures posted on the Revenues and Duties Ministry website, receipts from Ukraine's metals enterprises for the export of ferrous metals were down 12.2% at $7.335 billion in H1. Ferrous metal accounted for 23.87% of receipts from total product exports from Ukraine for the six months (24.86% a year earlier).

Ukraine imported $1.091 billion worth of ferrous metals in H1 ($1.182 billion worth in H1 2012). Ukraine exported $1.351 billion worth of metal products in January-June ($1.515 billion) and imported $549.252 million worth ($585.138 million).
