Geneva II needs immediate action by those who influence Syrian opposition
ROSTOV-ON-DON. Oct 28 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called on those who have influence on the Syrian opposition to intervene in the situation with regard to convening the Geneva II conference.
"Generally, the situation with Geneva II requires immediate action by those who have influence on the opposition. A whole range of issues arises due to the fact that this opposition is split," Lavrov said at a press conference given jointly with his Ukrainian counterpart Leonid Kozhara.
Each of these groups "has its point of view," he said.
"Simultaneously, the combat units that were once associated with units made up of foreign activists of the Syrian opposition from the so-called national coalition now disassociate themselves from it, saying they have never vowed to be loyal to it. A whole number of groups are saying directly that al Qaeda is close to them and they generally follow its instructions," Lavrov said.
