No plans to use Borei strategic submarines as multirole ones - Russian Navy Main Staff
MOSCOW. Nov 1 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Defense Ministry has denied news reports alleging plans to use Borei-type strategic missile carrying nuclear submarines as multirole submarines.
"Any reports claiming that Borei-type strategic missile carrying nuclear submarines will be used by the Navy as "multirole submarines" are untrue," a Russian Navy Main Staff spokesman told Interfax-AVN.
"A transition of strategic nuclear submarines to the category of multirole submarines is not on the agenda. The so-called multi-purpose function, which envisions the use of strategic nuclear submarines' standard torpedoes, is not their core function. That is why using Borei nuclear submarines as multirole ones would be identical to using [Tupolev] Tu-160 strategic missile carrying [bombers] as frontline fighter jets," the spokesman said.
"Borei-type submarines will tackle their tasks exactly as strategic missile carrying submarines," he added.
