Visa-free travel to lead to major breakthrough in relations of South Korea, Russia - ambassador

MOSCOW. Dec 24 (Interfax) - It is hoped that the relations of Russia and South Korea will reach a major breakthrough in 2014, South Korean Ambassador to Russia Wi Sung-lak said.

"The new year will become a year of mutual visits so I expect a considerable growth in exchanges between our countries. We are certain that quantitative increase of exchange will lead to a major breakthrough in the bilateral relations," Wi Sung-lak said.

A number of agreements have been reached during the recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to South Korea, in particular an agreement on visa-free travel between the two countries, which comes effect since January 1, 2014, has been signed, the ambassador said.

Visa-free travel "will become a key event in enhancing mutual ties" in the bilateral relations, Wi Sung-lak said.

"The coming year is the Year of the Horse. Horse is a symbol of dynamics. Let new major dynamic breakthroughs occur in the Korean-Russian relations in the Year of the Horse," the ambassador said in Russian.
