Russia welcomes adoption of new constitution in Tunisia - Foreign Ministry statement
MOSCOW. Jan 29 (Interfax) - Russia has welcomed the adoption of a new constitution by Tunisia.
"We welcome this landmark domestic policy event and consider it an important milestone on the way to the implementation of democratic transformations by the Tunisian leadership," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary on its website on Wednesday.
"We expect that the new Tunisian government led by Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa put together yesterday and receiving support from the entire spectrum of political forces will be able to attain all challenging goals facing the country to set up the necessary conditions for sustainable socioeconomic development and prepare for parliamentary and presidential elections in Tunisia," it said.
"The adoption of the fundamental legislation of the Tunisian state has become a result of a lengthy and painstaking process of consultations on its draft, involving representatives of all principal political forces and movements of Tunisia," it said.
The Tunisian National Constituent Assembly endorsed the new constitution by a majority of votes on January 26, and the Tunisian president, prime minister and parliamentary chairman signed it on January 27.
