Lenin monument brought down outside Kyiv
KYIV. Jan 30 (Interfax) - A monument to 1917 Bolshevik Revolution leader Vladimir Lenin was knocked down by unknown persons in the town of Fastiv in the Kyiv region, a local police spokesman told Interfax.
"The police were alerted about the incident at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday. An investigative group who arrived at the site established that unknown citizens had used a wrench and a rope to bring down the moment. As a result, the statue of some six meters high was damaged," the spokesman said.
A criminal investigation has already been opened on the counts of hooliganism (Part 1 of Article 296 of Ukraine's Penal Code]. Under Ukrainian legislation, the illegal demolition of a monument carries a fine of up to 17,000 hryvni, up to six months in jail or up to five years of travel restrictions.
Police are searching for the persons involved in the incident.
