Ex-Russian Defense Minister Serdyukov amnestied - source

MOSCOW. March 6 (Interfax) - Former Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov has been amnestied by the investigative authorities, a source with knowledge of the situation told Interfax on Thursday.

The Russian Investigative Committee's Main Military Investigations Department made this decision back on February 21 based on an amnesty act passed by the State Duma to mark the 20th anniversary of the Russian Constitution and at Serdyukov's request.

"The former minister who was charged with negligence filed a request with the investigator on applying amnesty to him, which was granted virtually immediately," he said.

Hence, "Serdyukov's criminal prosecution has been ended on non-rehabilitative grounds."

The military prosecution agencies have not objected to the decision, he said.
