Several arrested during unsanctioned protest in Baku - TV
BAKU. April 22 (Interfax) - Police in Baku has foiled an attempt to stage an unsanctioned protest outside the building of the Baku court for grave crimes, where a trial in the case of activists from the NIDA movement is taking place, according to the Azeri television channel ANS.
Police have arrested two demonstrators, the channel said.
The court is trying eight activists from the youth movement NIDA, who were arrested in March-April 2013 on the charge of plotting mass disturbances. They were also charged with illegal storage of explosives, drugs and disruptive behavior.
The prosecutor asked the court to sentence the defendants Zaur Gurbanly, Rashadat Akhundov and Ilkin Rustamzade to eight and a half years of imprisonment each; Rashad Gasanov, Bakhtiyar Guliyev and Magomed Azizov, to eight years each; Uzeir Mamedli, to seven and a half years; and Shain Novruzlu, to six and a half years.
