Ukraine is facing cheapest elections in its history - head of Central Elections Commission
KYIV. May 14 (Interfax) - Ukrainian Central Elections Commission Chairman Mykhailo Okhendovsky said the upcoming presidential elections in Ukraine will be the cheapest presidential elections in the country's history.
"In my view, these presidential elections will be the cheapest in history in terms of the presidential candidates' electoral costs," Okhendovsky told a briefing on Wednesday.
Okhendovsky said the candidates had demonstrated low activity in terms of the publication of election campaigning materials back in April. "In my view, this activity is still low," he said.
"According to tentative calculations, it can be said that the costs of the electoral funds are much lower than they were in the previous presidential and parliamentary elections," he said.
Speaking about the electoral costs of the Central Elections Commission, Okhendovsky said the state budget envisages 1.17 billion hryvni, of which some 500 million is reserved for a possible repeat voting. "It won't get any higher, it will most likely be less. Until now the Central Elections Commission has been able to save on every stage of the election process," he said.
