Search for new gold deposits starts in Sakhalin, Kurils

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. May 27 (Interfax) - The Sakhalin Geological Survey Expedition, a unit of the geological holding Rosgeologia, opened its 56th surveying season last week.

"This summer specialists will complete the geochemical search for gold in the Yuzhno-Kunashirskaya area (the Island of Kunashir, the South Kurils in the Sakhalin region), which started in 2012," the Sakhalin Geological Survey Expedition press service said on Tuesday.

This season the geologists will update and confirm the prospecting data collected over the past two years and draw up a map of gold mineralization potential of the Yuzhno-Kunashirskaya area.

Geologists from the northern prospecting party will move to a new territory. They will spend three years, 2014-2016, drawing up a map of resources of the Nogliki district in northern Sakhalin and assessing the availability of hydrocarbon, placer gold, coal and other resources.

"This area holds a particular geological interest. It is located on the western coast of the peninsula, the former location of the Amur River delta. The river had been carrying fine-grained gold for 15 million years. According to the official statistics, the contemporary Amur River carries about five tonnes of gold into the sea each year. Sakhalin geologists have long been pointing to the vast fine-grained gold potential of this area," the press service indicated.

A party searching for commonly occurring mineral resources is completing a two-year project in 2014. Geologists started their search for construction stone in the Nevelsky district on the southwestern coast of Sakhalin in 2012. They will do additional prospecting and assess the reserves this season.

In all, about 30 members of three geological survey parties and the State Center for Subsoil Water Monitoring will work in the field this year.

The Sakhalin Geological Survey Expedition is a geological survey company focused on the search for and prospecting of coal, metallic and nonmetallic resources, construction materials, thermal waters and subsoil drinking water resources. It was attached to the holding Rosgeologia consistent with the Russian president's order of July 15, 2011.
