Some 45 kg of heroin seized in St. Petersburg, three traffickers busted - FSKN
MOSCOW. June 25 (Interfax) - Forty-five kilograms of heroin were seized in a police operation in St. Petersburg, Federal Drug Control Service head Viktor Ivanov said.
"Three gang members were detained. Some 45 kilograms of heroin were impounded," he said at a meeting of the State Anti-Drug Committee in Moscow on Wednesday.
"A large Afghan heroin pipeline to the Russian Federation has been liquidated," he said.
According to Ivanov, the drugs were transported via five Central Asian states and seven regions.
"They planned to deal the heroin camouflaged as onions in the Moscow region," Ivanov continued.
The Federal Drug Control Service said earlier 1.5 million out of 8 million Russian drug addicts were doing Afghan heroin. Drugs kill up to 70,000 young Russians each year.
