RT to compete for top award in Emmy International final
MOSCOW. Aug 13 (Interfax) - The RT television channel has for the third time reached the final in the prestigious News Emmy International award, with its series of reports about a hunger strike by Guantanamo prisoners, the TV channel's external-communications department said in a statement.
The Russian TV channel has been nominated for the international award for its series of reports about the hunger strike by inmates at the U.S. military base in Guantanamo (Cuba) in protest against illegal imprisonment and mistreatment.
"After several months of talks and bureaucratic hurdles RT correspondent Anastasia Churkina managed to get inside the notorious prison where terror suspects have been held indefinitely without trial for over a decade now. As part of the special Guantanamo project RT journalists spent six months covering mass protests at the U.S. prison and talking to experts and ex-prisoners of Guantanamo," the statement said.
This is the third time that RT has been nominated for the News Emmy, the channel said. In 2010, RT was nominated for a report about the first Russia visit by U.S. President Barack Obama in July 2009, and in 2012 for its coverage of Occupy Wall Street protests which began in the U.S. in 2011.
Emmy International is the equivalent of the Oscars in the television industry and is regarded as one of the most prestigious awards. It is awarded by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the world's largest organization which brings together representatives from the leading broadcasting companies from across the globe. This year the News Emmy International award ceremony will be held in New York on September 30.
