None of 22 suspected Ebola cases confirmed in Russia - Rospotrebnadzor director

MOSCOW. Oct 22 (Interfax) - The risk of the Ebola virus being brought into Russia persists, but none of the 22 suspected Ebola cases in Russia has been confirmed, Anna Popova, the head of Rospotrebnadzor and chief state sanitary inspector of Russia, told Interfax on Wednesday.

"Twenty-two people have been tested for Ebola. None of the tests was positive," she said.

"The risk of the Ebola virus being brought into Russia persists. All necessary measures are being taken to prevent it," she said.

Popova said the 95 people who have come to Russia from West Africa remain under medical observation and 378 such people are no longer under medical observation.

The Russian sanitary services are working at checkpoints in airports over the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa. Doctors are also monitoring the condition of people arriving from West Africa (mainly students).

"The government has decided to provide funding to equip airports with additional thermal imaging devices, stationary and mobile," Popova said.

Popova earlier said individual cases of the Ebola virus being brought into Russia are possible, but the virus will not spread in the country.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, which cites the World Health Organization, 9,200 people have suffered from the Ebola virus in West Africa, and over 4,500 of these people have died.
