Husband of ex-Kyrgyz prosecutor general charged with fraud
BISHKEK. Feb 27 (Interfax) - Investigators from the Kyrgyz National Security Committee has brought charges of fraud against Baktybek Abdykaparov, the husband of the country's former Prosecutor General Aida Salyanova, a committee spokesman told Interfax on Friday.
"On February 26, as part of a fraud inquiry, Abdykaparov, the husband of ex-Prosecutor Generak Salyanova, along with other people, was charged with colluding to commit large-scale fraud," the spokesman said.
Abdykaparov was placed under travel restrictions.
According to earlier reports, the Investigative Department of the Kyrgyz National Security Committee opened a criminal inquiry into claims that a bribe of $50,000 was paid to certain people in exchange for dropping a criminal case opened against managers of the Tazalyk (Purity) municipal enterprise.
"The people involved in committing this crime were questioned during the inquiry. They testified that the money had been transferred to Abdykaparov, and they confirmed their testimony during face-to-face interrogations in the presence of their lawyers," the committee said.
This criminal investigation was opened on January 5, 2015 and is due to be completed by March 5, when the case will be forwarded to the country's court.
Salyanova herself said more than once she does not believe her husband is guilty, and this situation was only one of the reasons behind her resignation earlier this year.
