Water fills ship aground off Kamchatka - rescuers

PETROPAVLOVKS-KAMCHATSKY. March 1 (Interfax) - Water has filled the machine compartment of a fishing vessel that has run aground off Kamchatka, chief of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky sea port's rescue center told Interfax.

The crew aboard the Narval have survival suits and life jackets at their disposal, and they are in no need of medical aid, rescue center chief Artur Rets told Interfax.

A Mil Mi-8 rescue helicopter flew to the Narval to evacuate the crew on Sunday, but returned to the base due to high winds. The rescue operation will continue on Monday morning, earlier reports said.

The rescue vessel Spravedlivy, sent to the stricken Narval, is expected to reach the crew on March 3.

The Russian fishing vessel Narval, registered at the Port of Vladivostok, ran aground in the Avacha Bay off Kamchatka early on Sunday. None of the seven-member crew was injured in the incident, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry reported. The ship is located between Cape Shipunsky and Bechevinka Harbor 80 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and two kilometers from the coast.
