FSKN: Drug-related mortality in Russia down to 90,000 in 12 years

YEKATERINBURG/MOSCOW. March 30 (Interfax) - Drug-related mortality in Russia has reduced to 90,000 a year, Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN) chief Viktor Ivanov said on Monday.

"Mortality rates in the young age group, 15 to 34, reached a historical maximum, 140,000, in 2003. This deplorable rate of mortality in our younger generation has been reduced to 90,000 through joint effort," Ivanov said at a conference in Yekaterinburg.

According to the FSKN official statistics, 8 million Russians use drugs, including 1.5 million using Afghan heroin.
