U.S. sanctions against Minsk extended for another year

MINSK. June 11 (Interfax) - United States President Barack Obama has extended U.S. sanctions against Belarus for a year, the White House said in a press release.

In his notice to the U.S. Congress Obama recalled that the actions and policies of certain members of the Belarusian government and other individuals undermine democratic processes or institutions in Belarus.

According to the White House head, human rights abuses related to political repressions are still relevant for Minsk.

Such things pose an unusual and extraordinary danger to U.S. national security and foreign policy, Obama said.

U.S. sanctions against Belarus were introduced by Obama's predecessor, George Bush Jr. in 2006 and were subsequently toughened several times. The previous sanctions period expires on June 16, 2015.
