Lavrov in meeting with Chinese foreign minister: development of Russian-Chinese relations is a priority
KUALA-LUMPUR. Aug 5 (Interfax) - The development of Russian-Chinese relations is in line with the interests of peace and stability, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Kuala-Lumpur.
"The development of Russian-Chinese relations is Russia's priority and I hope it is in line with the interests of peace and stability," Lavrov said.
Lavrov also recalled the visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Russia in May and the upcoming visit by the Russian president to China.
"Our leaders met in July when they participated in the SCO and BRICS summits in Ufa. In a month, the Russian president will attend the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the victory in China's war against Japanese militarism at the invitation of the Chinese president. I hope we can discuss the preparations for this important visit with you today," Lavrov said.
Wang Yi, for his part, reiterated that Russia "very successfully hosted the SCO and BRICS summits" last month.
"All these things once again confirmed Russia's very high ability to organize large international events and the important international influence of your country," the Chinese minister said.
"This year, the 70th anniversary of the Victory in World War II is marked. The people of Russia and China not only suffered heavy losses, but they also played the main role in the winning the war," the Chinese foreign minster said.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the ASEAN forum.
Annual events organized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a ministerial Russia-ASEAN meeting, a meeting between the foreign ministers of the countries participating in the East Asia Summit (EAS), and the 21st session of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) are being held in Malaysian on August 5-6.
