Russia's Northern Fleet ships complete missions around Kotelny Island in Arctic
MOSCOW. Sept 25 (Interfax-AVN) - A Northern Fleet detachment of combat and support ships that accomplished tasks during a long-distance Arctic voyage has completed its mission in the area of the archipelago of the Novosibirsk Islands and is being prepared to resume its journey, Northern Fleet spokesman Captain 1st Rank Vadim Serga told Interfax-AVN Thursday.
"Currently, some ships are anchored in the Bukhta Stakhanovtsev [bay] near Kotelny Island in the Arctic, some are waiting out the storm in different areas in the Laptev Sea and the Vilkitsky Strait along the route of the voyage," Serga said.
The Northern Fleet sailors have spent 10 days in the area of the Novosibirsk Islands.
"During this period, they accomplished a full series of various scheduled combat training exercises, starting from an amphibious assault on an unequipped beach and including defense drills to protect an Arctic island area and a maritime coast of Russia," he said.
