Kazakhstan to host Syrian opposition talks on Oct 2-4 - ministry

ASTANA. Oct 2 (Interfax) - Astana will host the second round of negotiations between representatives of the Syrian opposition on October 2-4, the press service of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry reported.

Kazakh State Secretary Gulshara AAbdykalikova will speak at the opening of the negotiations, the press service said in a statement on Friday.

The talks will be held behind closed doors.

Representatives of several Syrian opposition groups asked the Kazakh leadership to host the second round of intra-Syrian dialog.

"Given our serious concern over the humanitarian situation in Syria and our sincere hope that such a meeting will promote the achievement of a resolution to this many-years bloody conflict, such a request was responded to positively," the statement reads.

It was reported earlier that between 40 and 60 representatives of various political movements from Syria and other countries, among them the United States, Europe and Turkey, will attend the talks in Astana.

Syrian opposition forces held their first negotiations in Astana on May 25-27, 2015.
