Syria's Tartus where Russian Navy facility is located to be able to receive heavy-lift ships
MOSCOW. Oct 14 (Interfax-AVN) - The Syrian port of Tartus, the location of a Russian Navy supply and logistics facility, will be able to receive heavy-lift ships after fairway bottom dredging and pier reinforcement is over, a source with knowledge of the situation told Interfax-AVN on Wednesday.
"Port fairway clearing and dredging works are in full swing in Tartus. The KIL-158 lifting and mooring barge of the Black Sea Fleet has been used for that purpose. The Donuzlav hydrographic vessel took relevant measurements," he said.
Piers are being reinforced and some of the port infrastructures are being renovated, he said.
"Once the works are done, the supply and logistics facility will be able to receive ships of the second rank and heavy-lift vessels, which will largely improve the logistics capacities of the port," the source said.
Black Sea Fleet floating workshops have undergone rotation at the facility and the PM-56 crew of Capt. 2nd Rank Igor Bakuradze (Reserve) began its six-month watch. The Donuzlav hydrographic vessel will depart for Sevastopol before the end of this week.
